Stephen Hickman, D.V.M.

Having served on the Board of Health of Canton City Public Health since 1986, Dr. Stephen Hickman, D.V.M. is the longest-tenured member of the Board.

Born and raised in Portsmouth, Ohio, Dr. Hickman went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts.  He served active duty in the United States Air Force for four years and active reserve duty for six additional years. He graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1978, where he received the Oscar V. Brumley Award for Leadership and Scholarship.

After practicing veterinary medicine in Buffalo, New York until 1982, Dr. Hickman moved to Canton, Ohio, where he eventually established Mellett Animal Hospital in 1984.  In addition to serving the City of Canton on the Board of Health, Dr. Hickman provided veterinary care for the Canton City Police Department K-9 Unit until his retirement.

He has served his profession as the long-time Treasurer of the Stark County Academy of Veterinary Medicine and he is a member of the National Association of Public Health Veterinarians.  He is a past President of the Jackson Township Historical Society and was an avid scuba diver, motorcyclist and racquetball player for many years.  He also enjoys designing and making furniture.

Although he was not re-elected as the President Pro-Tem of the Board of Health in 2023, Dr. Hickman filled that role admirably for several years. Dr. Hickman continues to serve on the Board as a regular member, and was most recently reappointed by Mayor Bernabei in 2022.
